WHEN SHOULD YOU THROW AWAY YOUR UNDERWEAR?
IF FASHION DESIGNER AND RENAISSANCE MAN TOM FORD SAID IT, YOU’D BETTER LISTEN: “MEN SHOULD THROW AWAY OLD SOCKS AND UNDERWEAR EVERY SIX MONTHS.”
If you don’t believe Tom, maybe you’ll believe market research. Clorox, the bleach manufacturer, conducted a poll discovering that one in every eight guys will wear their underwear twice or even three times before washing them. Mintel, a market research firm, found that one in every five males do not change their underwear on a daily basis.
The six-month theory is easier said than done, because life often gets in the way of underwear shopping, but dig: wearing new, good-quality underwear (briefs, boxers, or boxer briefs) makes you feel more confident and in control – even if nobody is going to see it.
If your men’s underwear feels good and provides the right kind of support, there is no choice but to feel better about yourself. If you are wearing new clothes, wearing old, beat-up underwear underneath defeats the purpose.
Think about what you put your underwear through in six months. You know you need to put it out of its misery at that point. It’s the most worn item of clothing in your wardrobe.
Also, go crazy on your underwear purchases. Have a month’s worth of underwear in your drawer (same for socks). Don’t put undue pressure on a small collection that will last you to the next wash day. A large rotation will save on the wear and tear of the underwear that you have – and lengthen its lifespan up to that six-month deadline. You should buy even more if you are an athlete, or if you travel often.
If you’re the sentimental type, don’t get too attached to your underwear. If it’s sagging, losing its elasticity, or showing holes or non-removable stains, it’s time, brother. Don’t even wait for the six-month deadline. It’s not coming back.
